Born in Wilmington in 1908, Henry Jay MacMillan created an historic record of the War through his paintings. Inducted into the Army in 1942, MacMillan participated in World War II in the European theater of operations against Germany. In addition to his duties as a soldier, he was also commissioned by the Army to paint scenes of the places he visited during his service

This section provides original paintings by MacMillan, who before the War has assisted in establishing the Wilmington Museum of Art and in decorating Thalian Hall. The paintings were previously featured in Cape Fear Museum's 1995 exhibit "Behind the Lines: A Wilmington Soldier Paints War-Torn Europe, 1944-45."
