  • Additional Study Space During Finals

The evening hours during exam time have traditionally been some of Randall Library's most busy open hours. We know it is sometimes difficult to find space to study or even sit.

In response to student concerns, Academic Affairs has worked cooperatively with Business Services and arranged for additional study space.

Dub’s Café, located in the Warwick Center, will open each night at 9:00 p.m. and close at 12 midnight beginning Sunday, April 29 and ending Monday, May 7. Free food snacks and temporary electrical outlets will be available for students. The area will be staffed by a Security Guard hired and trained by the University Police. Dub's Cafe is UNCW's second and newest dining hall.

Having an additional space where students can sit, study, and plug in promises to help students who have had difficulty finding places in the Library in previous semesters.

  • Author Greg Melville

The first of Randall Library’s One Book One Community events for 2010 will take place Friday, March 19, at 4:00 in front of the library. Greg Melville, the author of Greasy Rider, will be interviewed by Ben Steelman. Questions from the audience will also be accepted. Pomegranate Books will be on hand with copies of Greg’s books and similar themed books for purchase. The author will be available to sign books after the talk.

This year’s OBOC selected title, Greasy Rider: Two Dudes, One Fry-Oil Powered Car and a Cross-Country Search for a Greener Future, is about the first cross-country road trip in a car powered with recycled french-fry oil. Greg, along with his college friend Iggy, made a series of interesting stops along the way including a trip to Al Gore’s home in Tennessee, Google’s solar powered headquarters and an eco-friendly Wal-Mart. It is these stops along the way that make this a thought-provoking read.

You can see a complete list of events at http://library.uncw.edu/oboc. Events include a Transportation/Sustainability Show at CFCC North Campus, a talk by Dr. Pete Schuhmann of the UNCW Department of Economics, and a local foods and gardening show at NHC Public Library.

What to do with UNCW Records and When to do it

Did you know there is an official records retention schedule for the UNC system, approved by the State of North Carolina and the UNC General Administration? Employees who are the custodians of records in the office, have responsibility for records management or want to learn more about the legal obligations, should attend this workshop. Learn what constitutes a public record, what key exceptions exist for keeping records confidential, the length of time required to keep records before they may be destroyed, the types of UNCW information collected by University Archives, and how to best maintain the enormous number of electronic records received and sent on a daily basis. Personnel from the General Counsel's Office, ITSD and Randall Library will present this workshop.
