Haitian Heritage: Portraits of Early Immigrant Life in Florida

Randall Library is excited to unveil an exhibit of photographs by Arthur Bacon that documents the experience of Haitian Immigrants in Belle Glade, FL in the early 1980s.  The exhibit is part of  Global Focus: Haiti, a campus-wide exploration of the rich culture and compelling history of our international neighbors to the south, organized by the Office of Cultural Arts.

Dr. Darrell Irwin, professor of Sociology and Criminology at UNCW, loaned the photos for exhibition and has composed a scholarly narrative to accompany  the images, outlining his connection to Belle Glade and his work resettling Hatian refugees, many of whom became sugar cane cutters.

This exhibit, located on the first floor of Randall Library, adjacent to Java City, will be on view through the Fall semester.  For more information about Global Focus: Haiti and a list of events, please visit the Office of Cultural Arts's Global Focus | HAITI webpage.
