Unshelved: North Carolina Living Treasures

The Selection Committee for the 2013 North Carolina Living Treasures Award (NCLTA) is pleased to announce the recipients of this year's award- Monique Lallier and Don Etherington. Both are among the most renowned bookbinders and conservators practicing their craft today.

In previous years, nominations of craft artists who work in any or all of the traditional craft fields were welcome. This year, we have decided to focus on one craft in particular- book art. In celebration of book artists as craftspeople, we recognize active explorations of both contemporary and traditional artistic practices related to the book as an art object. The award was originally conceived by UNCW faculty member Dr. Gerald "Jerry" Shinn (1934-2013) who coordinated the processes until he retired and moved from Wilmington.

For 2013, Randall Library and the Department of Art and Art History, have teamed with the Boseman Gallery at the Fisher Student Center for the NCLTA exhibit, opening reception, artist talk, and award ceremony. Please join the artists on Thurs. Oct. 3 at 4 p.m. in the Wrightsville Beach Room at the Fisher Student Union for a discussion and Q&A followed at 5:30 p.m. with a reception and award ceremony in the Boseman Gallery.
