Serials Reduction Project 2002

During Spring Semester 2002 the library conducted a Journals Reduction Project. A significant reduction in the serials budget was required due to continuing inflation rates for subscriptions along with a reduction in funding from the State Legislature. Spreadsheets were created for each academic department's subscription, showing the 5-year price history for each title, inflation rates, and indication of titles that are available online, either free or at a lower rate than the print subscription. Each department chair was visited and asked to cut 21% of their department's 2001 subscription costs. If cuts were made above 21% new titles could be requested. 655 titles were recommended for cancellation and 144 were converted to online only, resulting in a reduction of $268,321.86 in 2001 prices for subscriptions.
