Abstract
This collection contains records of the Department of Earth Sciences. Much of it consists of correspondence and memoranda. There are also research proposals, course syllabi, meeting minutes, reports, photographs, and T-shirts.

Provenance
UNCW Archives received the materials in Series 1-6 from the Department of Earth Sciences in the late 1990s. The items in Series 7 (T-shirts) were donated by the family of Dr. Duncan Randall in December, 2002.

Historical Note

According to the departmental website, http://www.uncwil.edu/earsci/(accessed 26 February 2002), the Department of Earth Sciences offers Bachelor degrees in Geography and Geology and a Masters of Science Degree in Geology. Faculty research includes cartography, climatology, cultural geography, environmental geology, geochemistry, geophysics, hydrogeology, mineralogy, oceanography, petrology, paleontology, sedimentology, spatial analysis, stratigraphy, and tectonics. Departmental offices are located in DeLoach Hall.

Timeline
1952-1969 Geography was offered as part of the Department of Social Sciences at Wilmington College.
1969 Wilmington College became The University of North Carolina at Wilmington.
1969 Geography began as its own department.
1970-1973 The department's new name, the Department of Geography and Geology, refelects the inclusion of both disciplines at this time.
1973 The Department of Earth Sciences was organized in Fall 1973, offering courses in Geography, Geology and Pre-Engineering Surveying.
1980 The College of Arts and Sciences was founded as a division of UNCW, with the Department of Earth Sciences as a department within this division.
1987 Graduate program in geology was first offered.

Scope and Content Note

This collection includes material from the office of the Department of Earth Sciences at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. The materials were transferred to UNCW Archives from the office of the department. The collection includes correspondence, memoranda, course syllabi, reports, research proposals, and other paperwork such as seminar and lecture announcements. There is also a collection of T-shirts that had belonged to Dr. Duncan P. Randall, including a Wilmington College shirt.
