Community

Contributions and influences from outside the campus.  Since the

school was formed to provide higher education for this geographical

area it is only fitting to include what the community has given to the

school.  This includes former UNCW students as Alumni.

Alderman Drive - from Wagoner Drive through parking lot B beside Alderman Hall

Cahill Drive - continue this name from existing Cahill Drive west and north toward Friday Annex

Community Drive - road running from Cahill to Honors House and International House parking area

Crews Drive - rename the section of Riegel Road that runs from college Road to Trask Coliseum

Hamilton Drive - continues from present Hamilton Drive across Riegel Road and into lot E

Kenan Hall Drive - from the parking area beside Kenan Hall to Randall Library

Lionfish Drive - formerly L Street

Racine Drive - continue the racine name across Randall Drive from the water tower south toward Leutze Hall as

                       Racine Drive (formerly Crews Drive)

Sawtooth Drive - road running between Riegel Road Lionfish drive by printing and purchasing

Seahawk Village Loop -road looping around the Seahawk Village apartments

Sparrow Drive - road running from Lionfish Drive to east entrance motor pool area

Suite Services Loop - road around University Suites

Tide Drive - road running through parking area connecting Lionfish Drive to Walton Drive

Seahawk Club

Also known as the UNCW Student Aid Association, this mission of this group is to promote and

support academic and athletic events and programs.  The organization was originally chartered in

1966 while under the direction of Wilmington College.  Through the growth of the organization the

charter was amended in 1992 as the Student Aid Association.

Formed in 1950 as Wilmington College Alumni Association

1969 - UNCW Alumni Association is organized with 13,342 alumni on record.

            May of 1969 the Wise Alumni House is deeded to the University by

            Lawrence Lewis, Jr. and Mrs. James L. Wiley.

            November 18, 1969 the first meeting is held.

Friends of Wilmington College

Established in 1965 with their first project being the organization of funds to build a library. 

Volumes went from 11,000 to 50,000.  The library opened in 1968 with a capacity of 200,000 volumes.

Arboretum

Bluethenthal Wildflower Preserve is a protected natural landscape that provides

insight into the unique ecology of southeastern North Carolina. 

The Ev-Henwood Preserve in Brunswick County offers additional natural beauty

for study and contemplation.

Razor Walker Awards

Since 1993, the Watson School of Education has honored individuals whose vision, tenacity, courage

and sacrifice have made a difference in the lives of young people in our state. Many of these individuals

have overcome great obstacles and taken significant professional risk to support the education and

health of children and youth.

Schweitzer Awards

Beginning in 1975 the Albert Schweitzer International Prizes were presented at UNC Wilmington

to individual who reflected Dr. Schweitzer's "reverence for life."  The recipients excelled in three

primary area of expertise: medicine, the humanities and music.  Three prizes were presented every four

years between 1975 - 1993.

Since 2002 the Award is facilitated through the Honors Scholarship Program and is given annually to a person

from the Cape Fear area that exemplifies the attitudes and ideals of Dr. Schweitzer.
