1861-1865
Thirteen (13) xerographic copies of letters sent to James and Elizabeth Gore High of Whiteville, North Carolina are contained in this collection. The letters were sent to them by their sons Daniel Pinckney High (a.k.a D.P. or Pink), John H. High and William J. High during the Civil War. James High also received letters from family friends, W(illiam) H. Best and W(illiam) R. Richardson, both of Whiteville.
James High (1808-1876) was a Justice and Commissioner of Columbus County during the 1860s. Daniel P. High (1834-?) enlisted May 12, 1862 in Company C, 1st Battalion N.C. Heavy Artillery. (See North Carolina Troops, 1961-1865: a roster, Volume I, Artillery, pages 21-22, 25.) After the war, Pink served two (2) terms in the General Assembly as a Representative of Columbus County. John Homer High (1840-?), age 21, and William J. High (1842-1862), age 19, enlisted April 23, 1861 in Company H, 18th Regiment of N.C. Troops. (See North Carolina Troops, 1861-1865: a roster, Volume VI, Infantry, pages 389, 394.) John was wounded at Boyd Landing, South Carolina, February 15, 1862. He was discharged on an unspecified date after March 20, 1862. John returned to farming after the war. William was killed at Frayser’s Farm, Virginia on June 30, 1862.
William H. Best enlisted April 23, 1861 in Company H, 18th Regiment N.C. Troops at age 26. He died at Woodstock, Virginia on or about November 10, 1862. (See North Carolina Troops, 1861-1865: a roster, Volume VI, Infantry, pages 389, 397.) William R. Richardson lived in Columbus County but enlisted in Wake County on October 26, 1864 in Company H, 18th Regiment N.C. Troops. He was captured at or near Petersburg, Virginia on April 2, 1865. After taking the Oath of Allegiance on June 17, 1865, Richardson was released from confinement at Point Lookout, Maryland.
