The Boys' Brigade. Founded St.
Valentine's day, 1896, by Col. Walker Taylor (1864 - 1937), The Wilmington Boys
Brigade was modeled on a successful club in Scotland. The only requirement
for membership was enrollment in any Sunday School and pledge regular
attendance. Initially all the boys lived in Dry Pond, attended Sunday
School at Immanuel Presbyterian Church and were taught by Col. Taylor. The
club grew rapidly, and in 1905 moved into their own two story Brigade Armory at
Second and Church streets, the gift of Mary Lily Kenan Flagler, donated in
memory of her father, Col. Rand Kenan. The Boys Club continues today with
nearly 1,000 members including females, and is affiliated with National
Organization Boys and Girls Clubs of America.
