Anchram H. and Elizabeth K. Evans
Civil War Letters, 1861 - 1865

The majority of this collection consists of correspondence between Anchram Harris Evans, a Confederate soldier during the Civil War, and his wife Elizabeth Kelly Evans (she is referred to as either "Bettie," or "Lizzie" in the letters). There are also a few letters between Anchram and his sister in the collection.  These letters offer both a picture of domestic life in Brunswick County, NC during the Civil War Era and a soldier’s first-hand perspective on serving in the War. Some of the topics discussed by the couple are the yellow fever epidemic in Wilmington, parenting issues in reference to their daughter Katie, bills, food shortages, camp life, clothing and supply issues in the army, national news, and the Presidential campaign of 1864.

This collection contains photocopies and transcriptions of the original documents, along with the documents themselves. The typed transcriptions were done by Troy Henry, an Evans descendant. Photographs of the letters, additional transcriptions and web linking was done by Shannon Sancartier in 2008

These letters were donated to Randall Library by S.S. "Bud" Jenkins, an Evans descendant, in 2003.

There are no access restrictions on this collection.
