This collection of over 300 aerial photographic images is a valuable resource to those studying the changing landscape of Southeastern North Carolina and parts of South Carolina. Though not complete, it offers a fascinating glimpse of how the area has grown in the 50 years between 1938 (the earliest images in the collection) to 1983, the last year of images.
Similar to the Army Corps of Engineers images MS133 these images are in an oversized format and require some assistance when interpreting. The images are quite large, in most cases 4' by 4' square and printed on photographic quality paper. The condition of the images varies from excellent (in one piece and easily unrolled) to very bad (image in pieces and/or unable to be unrolled)
Patience is a necessity when attempting to decipher the images and locate specific areas. To find the image you are looking for, locate the area on an index image and note the number. (An index image is available for most years.) The index number corresponds to a larger scale photographic image.
A magnifying glass, provided by special collections, can assist in your study of these images.
