Abstract
This collection contains oral history interviews, most of which are on videotape. Links to transcripts are provided when transcripts are available online. The interviews were largely conducted by personnel associated with Randall Library, although there are a few subseries that contain donated or purchased interviews. Interviews cover a range of people, from various professions, walks of life, age groups, and areas of the country. Special Collections and UNCW Archives staff conduct oral history projects that are in keeping with the larger goal of oral history: to make historically visible those whose experiences are not reflected in traditional written sources and documentary evidence.

This series captures the history of the University of North Carolina at Wilmingon (UNCW) and Wilmington College through the oral histories of people who have been involved with the institution since its founding in 1947. Faculty, staff, students, alumni, and community members and supporters are included. These are all visual oral histories, i.e., they are were recorded on videotape (mini-DV). This subseries was created in 2004 to preserve the stories of health care professionals who have practiced in New Hanover County. Eventually, the program will expand to record the oral history of health care in Bladen, Brunswick, Columbus, Duplin, New Hanover, Onslow, Pender, and Sampson Counties as well. The purpose of this series is to document the changes to the medical community and regional culture brought about by the advances in medical technologies and practices of the last century. Interview topics include physicians and their practices, nursing, hospitals, mental health, public health, home health, dentistry, military medicine, pharmacy, geriatrics, alternative medicine , medical technology, medical administration, hospice, and General Care. This subseries was created in 2002 as an offshoot of the World War II Veterans' Project. It began with a sequence of interviews with the commanding officers of each military branch of the U.S. Chaplains Corps. The project was expanded to include chaplains who served in World War II, other retired military chaplains, and chaplains still in service. Interviewees include chaplains from the U.S. Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines and National Guard. Included are Christian chaplains--representing a variety of denominations--and Jewish chaplains. Interview participants discuss their military and religious training, describing the range of their responsibilities as members of the military and as religious leaders. Included is discussion of the role of chaplains in combat zones. Project participants have served in conflicts such as the Korean War, the Vietnam War, the Persian Gulf War and the U.S. led Invasion of Iraq, as well as UN peacekeeping missions in Yugoslavia, Bosnia, Croatia, and Haiti. This series is ongoing. These are all visual oral histories, i.e., they were recorded on videotape (mini DV). Transcripts and VHS/DVD viewing copies are available.

4.4 Veterans' Heritage
Arranged alphabetically by name.
Most of the interviews concern World War II, from the perspectives of both home and abroad. Those interviewed for the World War II project have some connection to southeast North Carolina: they either lived in this region at the time of the interview, were born here, lived here when they enlisted, lived here during the war, or all of the above. Also included are stories of Camp Davis, the army base that was located north of Wilmington during the war. Highlights of the interviews are patriotic, poetic, and prophetic commentaries, which document the important role the Cape Fear region's people played in the Second World War. There are also veterans' interviews from time periods other than World War II, including conflicts such as the Korean War and the Vietnam War. These are visual oral histories, many of which were recorded on mini DV.
