Circulation

Circulation staff handle borrowing privileges and checkout and can explain renewals, recalls, reciprocal borrowing, and adding money to your UNCW One Card account. Additionally, staff members check out laptops, book group study rooms, search for missing items, and maintain the order of the collection by shelving, shelf reading and shifting. Staff members also handle checkout for VHS, DVDs, and Music CDs and they they assist patrons with searching for and locating reserve materials.

Circulation Policies/Library Use Policies

WHO MAY BORROW MATERIALS?
Currently enrolled students, faculty, staff and administration are eligible to check out library materials. Others may borrow materials according to circulation policies, call the Customer Services/Circulation Desk for information (962-3272) or check the quick-chart: http://library.uncwil.edu/web/access/borrowingchart.html.

HOW DO I CHECK OUT A BOOK?
Bring books you wish to check out and your UNCW ID/One Card to the Customer Services/Circulation desk for check out. A date due slip can be printed on request and it lists each title checked out and its due date. Loan periods are three weeks for undergraduates and four weeks for graduate students. Faculty and staff may keep books for the semester, but are subject to recall if another user requests the item.

An electronic security system at the exit ensures that Library materials have been checked out properly. Occasionally non-library books, especially textbooks, activate the alarm. If the alarm sounds as you are leaving the Library, please return to the Customer Services/Circulation desk so the staff can determine the reason for the alarm. Your cooperation is appreciated.

HOW LONG MAY I KEEP MATERIALS?
Loan periods are three weeks for undergraduates and four weeks for graduate students. Faculty and staff may keep books for the semester, but are subject to recall if another user requests the item.

HOW DO I RENEW A BOOK?
You may renew books you have checked out as long as they are not already overdue, and no one else has placed a hold on the item. You may renew books through the library homepage by clicking on the My Library Account link on the left side of the page, completing the form, and clicking submit. You may also bring the items to the Customer Services/Circulation desk or telephone 962-3272 to renew. To renew overdue items, bring them and/or your fine payment to the Customer Services/Circulation desk.

HOW DO I RETURN A BOOK?
Borrowers are responsible for items borrowed until materials are checked in at the desk. Books may also be returned through the outside book drop, located at the front of the building or in the drop to the left of the front door. Please do not return audiovisual materials through the outside book drop.

Overdue Fines

OVERDUE FINE RATES
Overdue fines, incurred when materials are not returned by the due date, are to be paid at the Customer Services/Circulation desk. The rates for each item are:

$.25 per day for each book
$.50 per hour for two-and four-hour reserve items
$1.00 per day for one-day and three-day reserve items
$1.00 per day for DVDs, VHS, and CDs
$.50 per day for reference books and periodicals
$.50 per day for Curriculum Materials Center diagnostic tests and AV material
$6.00 maximum fine.

Keeping track of your due dates is important and the library catalog through the My Library Account link allows you to view your own circulation record to verify due dates. After two months, fines are transferred to the Student Accounts Office. Delinquent borrowers are blocked from course registration, graduation, and transcript service. Borrowing privileges are suspended for non-University patrons as soon as a fine is incurred.


LOSING OR DAMAGING AN ITEM
If you lose materials checked out to you, you must pay for the replacement cost of each item plus any overdue fines up to $6.00. If you damage Library materials, you will be billed for the damage, up to the replacement cost of the item plus any applicable overdue fines. The Library reserves the right not to accept returned items after replacements have been ordered. Cases of attempted theft or mutilation of library materials are referred to Campus Security and the Dean of Students.

UNCW One Card
The UNCW One Card serves as the University ID and is used to check out materials in the library. This card is also used to deposit money on your account so that it can be used in photocopiers, vending machines, and with iPrint when the free print balanced is used up. Add money to your UNCW One Card at the Value Transfer Station, located by the entrance to the library.

Photocopiers
Photocopiers are located on the first and second floor of the library and all but one copier are restricted to use of the UNCW One Card or guest card. You may deposit money to your card at the Value Transfer Station. Guests to the library may use the coin operated copier near the Customer Services/Circulation Desk or purchase a guest card. Copying charges are .15 per page at the coin copier and .10 when the UNCW One Card or guest card is used. Microform copiers are located beside the AV Viewing room.

Disability Services
Elevators are available for persons with disabilities. Adjustable study carrels are available. A Kurzweil Reader and other equipment is available for the visually-impaired. If special assistance is required, please ask at the Customer Services/Circulation desk. Phone
A courtesy phone is available in the lobby of the library. There are two pay phones in the lobby of the Library.
