Library Policies - Disabilities Services

Link to main disabilities page.

William Madison Randall Library at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington is committed to providing equal access to all library resources and collections for all library patrons. Randall Library’s policy is to provide, whenever possible, arrangements that enable library patrons with disabilities to work independently. Where independent use of library services and collections are difficult, Randall Library will make provisions, as needed, to facilitate access and use of the Library’s resources and collections. Randall Library collaborates with the Office of Disability Services at UNCW, and is committed to upholding the letter and spirit of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973.

Additional Assistance and Scheduling Appointments
For your convenience and so that the librarians may serve all patrons equally, it is preferred that students requiring additional assistance schedule an appointment with the Library. Scheduling an appointment will guarantee that you obtain the assistance you need when you want it.

Patrons with disabilities in need of additional assistance may schedule appointments by contacting the Coordinator of Library Services for Individuals with Disabilities at least one (1) business day in advance. The Coordinator will then make all possible arrangements to assist the patron.

For assistance in typing a paper or performing research that does not require the use of Randall Library, the student or faculty member should contact the University’s Disability Services office.

Readers Program
Randall Library coordinates the Readers Program, which matches students with disabilities with fellow students who will pull books and journals, make photocopies, and act as eyes and hands for necessary computer work. This program is supported by student volunteers from the Center for Leadership Education and Service (CLES), and is managed by the Coordinator of Library Services for Individuals with Disabilities.

Pull Service
For patrons who need assistance in retrieving books and journals from the shelves, Randall Library staff will assist them if time permits. Patrons must know the call numbers of the books and know which volumes are needed for journals. The amount of time needed depends on staff availability. It is preferred that patrons make an appointment if needing assistance, and do not have a Reader (see Readers Program above). To schedule an appointment, patrons may contact the Coordinator of Library Services for Individuals with Disabilities. If patrons have not made an appointment for the Pull Service, they may leave their list at the Reference Desk and come back in a specified amount of time.

Photocopying Service
Photocopies are 7.5 cents per page if patrons are using their UNCW Student ID with Flex account. Otherwise, photocopies are 10 cents per page when using the copying machines and 20 cents per page when using the microforms machines. Patrons must know the necessary page numbers of books and citations to journal articles for the items they need photocopied.

Telephone Access
Any user needing special assistance, wishing to contact the library via telephone, may use Relay North Carolina to communicate with library staff. Relay North Carolina is a free service that provides full telephone accessibility to people who are deaf, hard-of-hearing, deaf-blind, and speech-disabled. <http://www.relaync.com/> Just dial 7-1-1 to connect.
