Searching the Library Catalog for Biographies
Search the Library Catalog for biographies using the SUBJECT search option and entering the last name followed by first name or initial of the person you would like information on (example 1). To do the broadest possible search to find items by and about the person, do a KEYWORD search with the word near between the first and last names. If you do not have a particular person to search, you have two options: Use the reference collection to find a person (instructions below) OR use a SUBJECT (example 3) and KEYWORD (example 4) search using biographies and profession.

SUBJECT ENCYCLOPEDIAS:
Subject encyclopedias are good resources to locate biographical information for a person with in area the encyclopedia covers. KEYWORD search the Library Catalog using the following search terms: encyclopedias and your chosen subject area.

Biography & Genealogy Master Index Index to biographical sketches found in current and retrospective biographical dictionaries.
Biography Index Index Collection CT 100 .B6 A cumulative index to biographical material in books and magazines.
LexisNexis Academic At the main LexisNexis page choose "People" for short full text bio's on politicians, business executives & etc.
Subject indexes such as MLA, Historical Abstracts, PsycINFO can be used to find citations to biographical information found in newspapers, journals and books. Listed below are basic search tips that can used in each index.
SIMPLE SEARCH TIPS:
- Type subject's name and biographies or biography. For example: george washington and biographies OR george washington and biography
- Use MLA International Bibliography for citations to the monthly periodical Biography is a good source for contemporary biographies. Issues are shelved in the Current and Bound Periodical collection. Bound volumes contain an index.
