Kenneth Dixon entered the Army in 1949 at the age of 17. After serving in Europe for several years, he volunteered to fight in Korea. While there, he earned the Distinguished Service Cross for bravery during the battle of Heartbreak Ridge in North Korea. Dixon spent nearly a year at Walter Reed Hospital, recovering from multiple gunshot wounds and a fractured skull.
