Jack James joined the US Marine Corps in Raleigh, North Carolina on July 10, 1945. He attended boot camp at Parris Island, South Carolina. His platoon had thirty-five 17- and 18-year-olds, a 15-year-old and several 16-year-olds who had lied about their age. James served as a cook and was stationed at Camp Pendleton, California near the end of WWII. He was discharged from the US Marines while stationed in California.
