Ervin W. Stocks enlisted in the U.S. Navy on September 28, 1944. He attended boot camp at Camp Perry, Virginia. His ship assignments included the USS Philadelphia, CL 41, USS Pillsbury, DE 133. 
  While aboard the USS Philadelphia, Ervin Stocks was part of Task Force 68, escort to President Harry S. Truman to Antwerp, Belgium and the Potsdam Conference. The USS Pillsbury has the distinction of being the first United States Naval vessel to sink a German U-boat, U505. She received a Presidential citation for her action in combat. Stocks was discharged at Camp Sheldon, Virginia.
