Bill Pepe became a member of the US Army Corps of Engineers in October of 1942. He received extensive training at Officer's Candidate School at Fort Belvoir, while stationed with the 297th Combat Engineer Battalion in Georgia, and while serving at Omaha, Nebraska. Pepe was also assigned to the 5th Engineers Special Brigade at Camp Shenango, Pennsylvania. He was present during the invasion of Normandy and saw military action throughout the European Theater. Pepe later participated in battles in the Philippines and at the Gulf of Lingaya. During one convoy cruise he was aboard the Naval Flag Ship Santa Sacia [sic].
