Tom Marangelli left the Bronx, New York and joined the US Marine Corps in August of 1943. He was 17 years old. His initial boot camp training was at Parris Island, South Carolina. He trained as a low- & high-speed radio operator while stationed with the 29th Regiment at Camp LeJeune, North Carolina. Marangelli's military campaigns included Guadalcanal, the Northern Region invasion of Okinawa and Sugar Loaf, Okinawa. He also saw action at Guam and Singtao, China. He spent time on the Island of Ulithi, near Okinawa, Japan. Marangelli was discharged from active duty in 1946.
