James Whitworth volunteered to join the Marine Corps in 1942. He attended training at Parris Island and New River Marine Base (later Camp Lejeune) and was assigned to the E Company 2nd Battalion 21st Marines, 3rd Marine Division.

   Whitworth became a corporal and served as assistant squad leader in Guadalcanal before attaining the rank of sergeant. Reverend Whitworth served from 1942-1945, until sustaining a blast concussion from a bomb dropped at Asan Point in Guam.
