An image of an ear with text reading: "The Escucha project aims to give voice to all"

A project by Nathaniel Ober, visiting artist at UNCW for the Spring 2019 semester, Escucha is a traveling time capsule of sound. It wishes to move through many hands-to hear of many stories while traversing the world, and to encourage less speaking and more listening. To share or listen, there is a capsule available in Randall Library’s Sherman Hayes Gallery.

Yellow Background, black text reads We Are Getting A New Roof, please visit a library service desk for assistance

Beginning Monday, May 13th, construction will begin on a brand new roof for Randall Library. This project is expected to last 6 weeks and the library will be operational throughout the project. Our hours of operation can be found here https://library.uncw.edu/hours

    What to Expect

    • This project is being managed by UNCW Project Management and Northstar Recovery Services. Northstar has been on campus for months providing disaster response after Hurricane Florence
    • Roofers have been directed by Northstar not to enter Randall Library for any reason
    • The roofers are scheduled to work 7 days a week from 6 AM to 8 PM but they cannot work in the rain
    • Roofers are working east to west, beginning with the area above our main entrance. The roof will be replaced in portions
    • Northstar and other campus employees will need to access to Randall’s interior for a small portion of the project
      • This interior access will most likely be focused on the second-floor northeast quadrant of the building (Government Information; Isaac Bear; Library Faculty Offices) where the roof is vulnerable to leaks. When this portion of the roof is being installed, crews will be covering certain areas of our collections with plastic and will watch for leaks. Please note that this is a precaution and Northstar and the roofers do not expect there to be leaks
    • Access to the roof will be provided by an external stair tower on the northwest side of the library which will be installed Monday, May 13th
    • Staging for this project is on the northwest side of the library, in portions of Parking Lot D, and will be contained by a temporary fence
    • Part of the portico will be blocked off during the project but the outside seating areas will not be affected

    Impacts

    • Since the roof will be replaced in portions, we understand that the noise will be constant in the areas the crews are working; we will do our best to communicate about which part of the roof is being repaired on a daily basis and may block off certain areas of the second floor
    • The sealant that is used during this process is harmless but odorous and Northstar is going to attempt to work with campus HVAC to disconnect certain airways to minimize any odor
    • The main entrance of Randall Library will not be closed during this project but when crews are working over these areas, there may be alternative routes provided
    • Access to the collection may be limited at times but our understanding is that this will be minimal. Changes to access will be communicated

    Messaging

    • We will provide both physical and digital signage which will be updated periodically to update our users about the roofing project
    • A spotlight news story has been added to our website
    • An alert message has been added our main webpage
    • Social Media will be updated
    • Please be patient. We will do our best to keep people informed about the project, but things happen and your flexibility and understanding is appreciated

    Other Considerations

    • Additional construction will be going on during the roofing process as the first-floor rear restrooms are renovated (near TAC)
    • Additional ductwork will be installed in Special Collections in order to better cool the new spaces
    • Please remember that Randall Library is completely closed on Friday, May 17th, and there will be no access through our front doors
