Updated July 2016
Randall Library is pleased to share the news that OCLC, the global library cooperative, has reversed its decision to discontinue the FirstSearch interface that provides power searching of the WorldCat database. As you may recall from the Library’s communications last spring, OCLC bundled the content of FirstSearch with another product, its own discovery service, thereby changing the interface and reducing the functionality of FirstSearch. At this time OCLC also announced a 2015 end of life date for FirstSearch. As a responsible steward of state funds, the Library made the difficult decision not to subscribe to this altered product. The library already subscribed to a discovery service through ProQuest, and we could not in good conscience double pay for a product we would not use, in order to retain the soon-to-be-discontinued FirstSearch interface.
OCLC recently released the following statement: “Librarians have told us how much they value the unique capabilities of FirstSearch, and we have listened…we understand that libraries need to deliver search experiences that meet different user needs, including providing detailed searching of WorldCat to support research and a variety of library workflows.” To this end, OCLC will continue the FirstSearch interface after all, and now offers it as a stand-alone resource.
With this news and after careful consideration, Randall Library has subscribed to FirstSearch with all of its features intact. The link is available on the Library’s A-Z list under “WorldCat [FirstSearch Interface]. Please visit https://library.uncw.edu/eresources/worldcat.
We appreciate your patience during this period without FirstSearch, and know that it is a critical resource for many of you. We hope that the workarounds that our Library Information Technology and Systems staff created and implemented were helpful, such as the “Get it from UNCW’ bookmarklet.
Your feedback matters. It was your voice, with other faculty and librarians, that was vigorously conveyed to OCLC at meetings and conferences across the country, and that made the difference and has resulted in the continuation of FirstSearch. Please do not hesitate to contact me at any time regarding library resources.
