Willis (1807-1860) and Amanda (1813-1888) and their five children lived
between and just west of the area between Magnolia and Warsaw in Duplin
County. They worked in corn, cotton,
and turpentine. A manuscript memorandum
indicates they owned twenty-four slaves.
Their son, John J. Wilson, served in the Confederate army. Willis and Amanda are buried in the Pollock
Family Cemetery in Duplin County (Duplin Country NC Gravestone Records, Vol.
2).
This
collection of family papers contains the following items:
Account Bills
List the purchases from merchants in Warsaw and Clinton, newspaper subscription
receipts, Wilmington inspectors’ certificates for turpentine, and tax receipts.
There are also papers relating to slaves, slaves’ bills of sale, lease
agreements for hiring out slaves, lists of expenditures re: slaves, division of
slaves.
Manuscript
memorandum listing dates of birth for Willis & Amanda, their children and
twenty-four slaves.
List of
students at W. R. Bell’s school (1857-1858).
List of
subscribers to build a canal.
Family
miscellaneous correspondence consisting of four letters and numerous envelopes.
Legal

(primarily from John J. Wilson, Company B, 51st North Carolina Infantry)
Wilson penned twenty letters to his parents from Campbell near Kinston,
and James Island and Camp McKethan near Charleston SC. Wilson evidently became ill in SC and was
sent home to Duplin County where he died in July, 1863. Included is a letter from his company
captain, W. R. Bell, requesting the return of Wilson’s gun and accoutrements, a
manuscript tribute from Company B, and a printed letter from the CSA Treasury
Department re: Accrued pay.
