Bishop Thomas Henry Wright Sermons
donated by his son
James Knowlton Wright (fall 2002)

The Wright family has been a presence in Wilmington ( Newton) since the arrival of Captain Thomas Wright in 1739. He married Ann Grainger, granddaughter of Joshua Grainger, who came to Wilmington from Charleston in 1729, and owned a shipyard at the foot of Church Street.

Bishop Thomas Henry Wright, born in Wilmington in 1904, attended Tileston School on Ann Street, and was President of first graduating class at New Hanover high School. After
graduation from University of The South, Sewanee, Tenn., he returned to Wilmington for a year prior to entering Virginia Episcopal Seminary, Alexandria, VA.

Reverend Wright was elected Bishop of East Carolina, in 1945, again returning to Wilmington and his home Diocese, presiding over St. James Episcopal Church, founded in 1739.

This collection was donated by James Knowlton Wright, second son of Bishop Wright and Hannah Knowlton Wright, and has no restrictions. Of further interest to the researcher may be MS169 St. James Episcopal Church records.
