This collection was compiled by John Gunn during his career as a journalist. The focus is on sports, especially the Marine Corps’ athletic teams, with a heavy emphasis on football. John Gunn joined the Marines in 1953 and spent two years on active duty and 28 years in the reserves. He lived in Wilmington, NC and Richmond, VA. before moving to Costa Mesa, CA, where he worked as the assistant sports editor on the Orange County (CA) Register. Gunn retired from the Marines as a Colonel in 1983 and spent the majority of his retirement researching the Marine Corps football teams. The materials in this collection span the years from 1916 – 1986, with an emphasis on World War II and the postwar years. He published two books about Marine Corps football; (Quite) a Few Good Men and The Old Corps.
