Laser Project Terms and Conditions

Our Laser Project Service is available for UNCW faculty, staff, students, and the community.

Laser Project Guidelines

  • All laser project requests must be submitted as a .JPG, .PNG, or .SVG file. Other file types will be returned for correction.
  • Your project will not be started until after the initial consultation.
  • The MakerStudio lasers cannot cut metal.
  • MakerStudio lasers are capable of cutting and/or engraving paper, wood, acrylic, and real leather. Absolutely NO plastics, vinyl, or mixed materials are allowed in the lasers. If MakerStudio staff cannot guarantee or certify what a material is, it is not allowed in the laser.
  • Please bring extra material for your request so that tests can be run beforehand to test what settings will work best to ensure successful final result.
  • All laser projects are time-consuming and will take around a minimum of 20-30 minutes. Please plan accordingly.
  • If the item is not picked up in 7 business days after notification that it is available for pickup it will become property of UNCW Library and will be recycled or displayed.
  • UNCW does not guarantee a successful project result. The cost of the material, regardless of quality, will still be charged.
  • All UNCW computer, network and Copyright policies apply to the use of laser cutters and any other MakerStudio equipment.
  • You may not use the lasers to create material that is:
    1. Prohibited by local, state, or federal law.
    2. Unsafe, harmful, dangerous, or poses and immediate threat to the well-being of others.
    3. Obscene or otherwise inappropriate for the University environment.
    4. In violation of another’s intellectual property rights, including to reproduce material that is subject to copyright, patent, or trademark protection. It is the responsibility of the user to verify the eligibility of the item to be printed.
  • Any medical devices, accessories, or healthcare-related items.
  • We reserve the right to refuse any laser project request for any reason.
  • UNCW takes no responsibility for the end-use of an object once that object is printed.
*You will be charged by the percentage of the sheet that you use. Example: Your project uses half of a sheet of acrylic. The cost to you would be $4.50
