DIY Information Literacy In-Class Activities

These in-class activities are designed to supplement the required information literacy lesson plans. Each activity addresses a different set of IL-related skills and learning objectives, and can be customized to the content or needs of your course. We recommend connecting them to your course papers or assignments if possible.

In-Class Activities:

  • Activity 1: Interrogating a Source (PDF)
    Learning Objectives:
    Students will be able to
    • Identify relevant evidence and information in a scholarly article
    • Distinguish different kinds of evidence
    • Connect relevant evidence to a range of different information needs
  • Activity 2: Cross Examination (PDF)
    Learning Objectives:
    Students will be able to
    • Identify the platform and author of a news story
    • Use lateral reading to assess the reliability and accuracy of a source
  • Activity 3: Navigating the Website (PDF)
    Learning Objectives:
    Students will be able to
    • Locate and use the library’s hours calendar
    • Find the library’s help resources and contact information
    • Locate other critical resources on the library website, such as the Get Started Researching guide, floor plans, and undergraduate library FAQ
  • Activity 4: Source Ranking (PDF)
    Learning Objectives:
    Students will be able to
    • Identify the author and purpose of a source
    • Retrieve a source record in the library’s main search
    • Assess a source’s value and fit for a given information need
