Advisory Boards at UNCW Library

Community Advisory Board

Purpose

The UNCW Library Community Advisory Board at UNCW is a group of seven engaged community residents representing a variety of stakeholder groups, including UNCW alumni and supporters, area cultural institutions, and community leaders. The role of the board is to offer advice and provide feedback to UNCW Library leadership on library services, spaces, resources, and programming.

Members are expected to share their insights and communicate user needs to library leadership as well as recommend approaches to increase the library’s engagement with other local organizations and citizens across Southeast North Carolina.  Advisory Board members will also be additional advocates for UNCW Library in the community.

The UNCW Library Community Advisory Board will represent the views of the community who may or may not be directly affiliation with UNCW.  It will complement the University Faculty Senate Library and IT committee, which addresses faculty-specific issues and needs, and the UNCW Library Student Advisory Board that advocates for undergraduate and graduate students.

Membership

Membership of the board will consist of:

  • At least one UNCW alumnus/alumna
  • At least one representative from the Cape Fear Museum, New Hanover County Library, or other local historical societies, museums or cultural institutions
  • At least one OLLI member
  • At least one member associated with UNCW Library archival collections

Members will serve two-year appointments with the ability to serve no more than two consecutive terms.  

Meetings

The full board will meet two times per semester (four meetings per academic year); board members may be asked on occasion to attend additional sessions with architects, consultants or others in order to gain user perspectives on specific issues.

Student Advisory Board

Purpose

The UNCW Library Student Advisory Board at UNCW is a group of 15 engaged UNCW students representing a variety of stakeholder groups, including the five colleges and schools, Student Government Association, and student leaders. The role of the board is to provide input and feedback to UNCW Library leadership on library services, spaces, resources, and policies.  Members are expected to share insights into user behavior and communicate user needs to library leadership as well as communicate to their constituent groups information about library resources and services. They will also recommend approaches to increase the library’s engagement with students and student groups.  Advisory Board members will be advocates for UNCW Library across campus and in the community.

The UNCW Library Student Advisory Board will represent the views of undergraduate and graduate students.  It will complement the University Faculty Senate Library and IT committee, which addresses faculty-specific issues and needs, and the soon-to-be established UNCW Library Community Advisory Board.

Membership

Membership of the board will consist of:

  • Two students, one undergraduate and one graduate student, from each of the five colleges
  • Two library student employees
  • One student nominated by SGA
  • One Honors student
  • One student tutor, ambassador, orientation leader. resident advisor or other student leader

Members will serve one-year appointments with the ability to serve up to  three consecutive terms.
