Summer 2024 Closure and Modified Service Plans

The library building is currently closed to all UNCW and community patrons while we undergo light renovation. The UNCW Library’s modified summer services will cease on Thursday August 8th while the staff prepare to open both buildings the following week. During this time all virtual services will be available; walk-up service will resume August 15th.  The university’s newly expanded and renovated library will reopen with normal operations on August 15!

During this time the library will offer the following modified services:

Library Help Desk

The Library Help Desk, where you go to check out, pick up, and return library items, and to ask in-person research help questions is at a temporary location just inside the front entrance of the library with limited service.

Visit the Library Help Desk from Monday – Thursday, 8am - 4pm, through August 8th. Walk-up service will be unavailable August 9 - 14, 2024.

Getting Materials

The print and physical media library collection will be unavailable for physical browsing, but UNCW faculty, staff, and students can check out items from the collection by placing requests for the items in the library online catalogAsk us to show you how to browse online. We have hundreds of thousands of ebooks, articles, reference materials, and streaming media items available for you 24/7 through the library website.

Requests will be filled within one business day (Monday – Thursday). An automated email will let you know your item is ready for pickup at the Randall Hall front entrance between the hours of 8:00am-4:00pm Monday – Thursday. Detailed instructions on how to pick up your items will be included in your pickup notification. The pickup location will be either at the Randall Hall front entrance, or at 24-hour self-service pickup lockers outside the library.

Getting Help

Virtual reference services and reference consultations (including chat with a live person!) will be available during normal hours over the summer.

Library Spaces Closed

All study and meeting spaces, classrooms, and technology in the library will be unavailable for the summer. Alternative study and computing spaces for the summer will be conveniently located in the R21 modular building on Chancellor’s Walk in room 2115. Desktop computers and iPrint machines will be available for student use. See the software available on computers in the R21 modular building. Room 2115 in the R21 modular building is open from 8am to 8pm, Monday to Thursday.

The Makerstudio and all adjacent services will be closed for the summer. Updated and expanded spaces will be opening in the expansion in time for fall semester. Please contact digitalmakerspace@uncw.edu for inquiries about fall semester planning.

The Center for Southeast North Carolina Archives and History will be closed starting May 1. Onsite research services cannot be accommodated during this time. The Center’s staff will make every effort to assist researchers remotely, but portions of our collection may be inaccessible until we reopen. Please direct all inquiries related to the Center’s collections to csencah@uncw.edu or (910) 962-7810

Other Library Services

Interlibrary Loan Services will be available during the summer. ILL Items on hold for pickup can be retrieved between the hours of 8:00am-4:00pm Monday – Thursday at the Library Help Desk, located in the front entrance of Randall Hall. Some delays in service are possible.

Instruction and Tours: We are happy to offer library-related instruction virtually or in your classroom for Summer 2024. Please contact your liaison librarian to schedule an instruction session, plan for in-library instruction for Fall 2024, or coordinate alternate locations if needed. Unfortunately, we cannot host any tours or summer group orientations of the library.

Course Reserve service will be limited to pre-arranged, specific situations. Contact rlcirculation@uncw.edu to discuss your Course Reserve needs for the summer.

NC Resident and Community Visitor services will be closed for the summer, with no access to the library collection or computing. NC Resident library cards will be extended by three months to compensate for this closure. Please contact rlcirculation@uncw.edu for more information.

There may be other unplanned disruptions to our services.
