Out of Print Screening and Discussion

In anticipation of the campus visit from The Onion founding editor Scott Dikkers, Randall Library invites you to a screening and panel discussion of the documentary "Out of Print."

Online satirical news website The Onion took the Internet by storm in 1996 after eight years as a print newspaper. Scott Dikkers, a comedy writer and filmmaker, is a founding editor of the publication. Dikkers will bring humor to this dramatic election year and shed light on the value of information literacy in the modern world as well as the role of satire in today's society when he appears at UNCW on Monday, September 26th. (for more information go to Leadership Lecture Series main page)

Randall Library hopes to start the conversation early with this provocative event. "Out of Print," narrated by Meryl Streep, draws us into the topsy-turvy world of words by illuminating the turbulent and exciting journey from the book through the digital revolution. Jeff Bezos, Ray Bradbury, Scott Turow, Jeffrey Toobin, parents, students, educators, and scientists all highlight how this revolution is changing everything about the printed word – and changing us.

Following the screening, please stay for a panel discussion with UNCW's own Bill DiNome, Student Media Coordinator; David Pernell, Communication Studies; Anna Patton, MFA Candidate Department of Creative Writing; Lisa Coats, Randall Library. The panel will be moderated by Anne Pemberton, Randall Library.

Mr. Dikkers' visit and all derivative programming is co-sponsored by Student Media and the Mimi Cunningham Speaker Series Endowment of the Department of Communication StudiesRandall Library and the Association for Campus Entertainment (ACE).

Accommodations for disabilities may be requested by contacting Christopher Rhodes, 910-962-7474 or rhodesc [at] uncw.edu at least 5 days prior to the event. UNCW is an EEO/AA institution.
