    Open Access Week/Media Literacy Week Film Screening

    Join Randall Library for a screening of the film The Internet's Own Boy: The Story of Aaron Swartz for Open Access Week and Media Literacy Week. The Internet's Own Boy depicts the life of American computer programmer, writer, political organizer and Internet activist Aaron Swartz. It features interviews with his family and friends as well as the internet luminaries who worked with him. The film tells his story up to his eventual suicide after a legal battle, and explores the questions of access to information and civil liberties that drove his work.

    International Open Access Week is organized by SPARC in partnership with the Open Access Week Advisory Committee. It was founded in 2008 by SPARC and partners in the student community. Open Access Week is an opportunity for the academic and research community to continue to learn about the potential benefits of Open Access, to share what they’ve learned with colleagues, and to help inspire wider participation in helping to make Open Access a new norm in scholarship and research.

    U.S. Media Literacy Week is hosted by the National Association for Media Literacy Education. The mission is to highlight the power of media literacy education and its essential role in education all across the country. U.S. Media Literacy Week calls attention to media literacy education by bringing together hundreds of partners for events and activities around the country

    Coffee and Cookies with Rob Hart UNCW Historian

    The University’s 75th Anniversary celebration and installation of a new chancellor provide an ideal occasion to reflect on the school’s past. UNCW Historian Rob Hart researched and published the most recent historical account of UNCW’s past, Giving Flight to Imagination, 2017. Join us in the Special Collections Reading Room on the Second Floor of Randall Library as Rob discusses how he used collections in the Center for Southeast North Carolina Archives and History, and specifically the University’s own records in its Archives to tell the story of UNCW.

    Mamava Pod | NOW AVAILABLE

    Mamava Pods are private, clean places to pump breast milk or nurse a baby. To access the space, please visit the Library Help Desk or the Library Security Desk to obtain a code. Our pod can be found on the Mamava app, a  free locator app that helps breastfeeding and pumping parents find thousands of approved lactation spaces.

    Banned Books Read In 2022

    BOOKS UNITES US, CENSORSHIP DIVIDES US!

    In celebration of Banned Books Week and Freedom of Expression Week, join us as we bring together student voices to read excerpts from their favorite Banned Books and share how their selections have impacted their lives. Participation is not required, and all are welcomed to attend.

    Students wrote these statements as part of Michelle Manning’s ENG 382: “Ways of Teaching Literature”. In this course, students performed research on banned books and wrote short descriptions that explain how the books positively impacted their lives.

    Coffee and Cookies with Bertha Todd Educator and Community Leader Tuesday September 13th at 11:30 AM

    Over the course of her thirty-three-year career, Bertha Todd served the students of Wilmington first as a librarian and then as a school administrator. During that time she worked actively for the peaceful integration of New Hanover County Schools. After retiring from Hoggard High School in 1985, she continued to work towards racial reconciliation through her active leadership in the 1898 Centennial Foundation. Join us in the Special Collections Reading Room on the Second Floor of Randall Library as Bertha discusses collections in the Center for Southeast North Carolina Archives and History that illustrate her amazing life and career.
