The Men of Carver: Mr. O and the Welding Class of 1973
The Men of Carver: Mr. O and the Welding Class of 1973 explores the life stories of welding teacher Aaron Ostrofsky, known as “Mr. O,” a Jewish immigrant from Eastern Europe, and his first class of students, a group of African American men.
In 1973, members of Carver’s graduating welding class jointly wrote a letter to their principal expressing their appreciation for Ostrofsky, whom they credited with supporting their growth as welders and as men. Professionally recorded interviews with surviving members of the class — George Washington, Tony Coward, Kenneth Wesley and Johnnie Davis — document their continued affection and gratitude for their former teacher. They reflect on Ostrofsky’s influence on their lives and the lives of their children and grandchildren, helping shape opportunities for future generations.
The exhibit is on view through Dec. 18 in the Sherman Hayes Gallery on the first floor of Randall Hall.
