Teaching, Learning, and Library Services (TLLS) is honored to invite you to our August 24, 2023 Open House! Join your colleagues from Randall Library, the Center for Teaching Excellence (CTE), and the Office of Distance Education and eLearning (DEeL) for an afternoon spotlighting opportunities, services, and upcoming events for UNCW faculty and instructional staff.   

Guests can circulate between themed tables, attend informal mini-sessions, and enjoy coming together at the beginning of a new academic year. You’ll also have a chance to check out some of the fantastic current (and future!) spaces that Randall Library has to offer.

And, if all of the above isn’t quite enough, there will also be giveaways!

Looking for a space to study? Need a space to work on a group project? Randall Library has 31 study rooms that you can use! To reserve a room, visit https://library.uncw.edu/room_reservations.

We’re launching a new group study reservation system at the same link on August 7, which will be easier to use and more mobile friendly. Reserve a room from your phone while on the go! Existing reservations will be migrated to the new system, so no need to worry about what will happen to reservations made before August 7.

You will not be able to make reservations from August 4 to the morning of August 7 while we migrate to the new system.

Monday, May 15th, we're migrating our Subject and Course guides to a new platform at libguides.uncw.edu. You can still access https://library.uncw.edu/guides as the link will redirect to the new site.

The library expansion continues to take shape! The rooms are being framed, the pipes have been laid, the electrical work is underway, and the construction is on schedule. 

This summer will see disruptions to library services as the connection between the two buildings is made and renovation work occurs in the existing Randall Library. 

Disruptions include:

• Some group study rooms will be offline at different times during the summer due to window replacement.
• The Randall Library Auditorium (2047) and one of our Instruction Classrooms (1039) will be closed for the summer.
• The vending machines will be moved to a temporary location on the first floor near the restrooms.
• The TAC walk-up service will move temporarily to the current Research Help Desk, near the front door of the library.
• Research Help will be offered virtually during the summer, and then will be available in-person at the current Circulation Desk.
• There will be construction noise, mostly occurring during intersession periods, as spaces on the first and second floors are renovated.

Congratulations to Madison Almond, the winner and first recipient of the Anne Pemberton Student Research and Creativity Award! This award has been given to Almond in recognition of her honors thesis "Comparative study to understand familiarity, confidence, willingness to learn, and knowledge of healthcare students with autism spectrum disorder (in progress)". The project was part of PBH 499 with instructor Dr. Sasha Canan. Almond graduates in May '23. Open Access Publishing Deal for UNCW Authors in Cambridge University Press Journals

Randall Library is excited to share that thanks to a deal brokered by the Carolina Consortium, authors affiliated with UNCW may now publish open access in any of Cambridge University Press's full and hybrid open access journals at no cost through a new “read-and-publish” agreement.

Open access publishing allows for increased engagement with your work. Benefits associated with publishing open access include higher citations and usage, immediate access to the latest research, and compliance with open access mandates from funders, among others. 

16 institutions across North and South Carolina have opted into this agreement with Cambridge University Press, which also offers subscribers access to Cambridge University Press journals content.  For more information on the Cambridge University Press agreement, visit this page.

UNCW authors are also able to take advantage of a similar agreement with Wiley full and hybrid open access journals. For more information on the Wiley agreement, visit this page.

Many college courses require you to use a graphing calculator, but they are expensive, and it’s easy to leave at home by accident on the day of a test or a study group -- or run out of batteries just as you finish entering a long equation. Randall Library has your back!

The Randall Library is now lending TI-83 Plus and TI-84 Plus calculators for 24 hours at a time. Borrow one to take your exams and quizzes, or use them in the library to finish your homework. You can borrow, and return, these calculators at the Circulation Desk during desk hours. Questions can be directed to https://library.uncw.edu/contact

We also have a few TI-84 Plus calculators with Python programming capability in addition to their regular features. Interested faculty can contact Sciences Librarian Sam Zelick for more information at zelicks@uncw.edu.  

Construction of the library expansion will continue during spring semester 2023. Currently the steel frame, decking, and roof are under construction, along with site and utility updates. While it is possible that the construction could cause noise impacts in the library, thus far the noise has been minimal. We are looking forward to a completion date of fall 2024. In the meantime, Randall Library is a great place to study, learn, explore, and relax!
